The Warning Labels of Life

While reading the newest post from sarahsD, I was recently reminded of a post I have contemplated for some time.  It’s all about danger.

Our entire childhood is filled with our parents saying NO, don’t touch that, it will hurt, or YOU ARE GOING TO CRACK YOUR HEAD OPEN IF YOU DON’T STOP JUMPING ON THE BED!!!!  Don’t eat that DON’T DON’T DON’T!!!!

I am sure you get the point, especially if you are a parent.  Of course when you have children and you are raising them, you want them to be as safe as possible.  Emergency room fees are expensive, not to mention you could have Child Protective Services in your business for the next year if the “wrong” kind of accident happens and they seem to think you are abusing your child.

However, you would think there would come a point in time that we could stop reading the warning labels on life and just enjoy life for what it is.  If we listened to every news report we could safely assume that orange juice will help fight cancer, but put a diabetic into sugar shock.  I think orange juice is the only thing that fights cancer, because scientists claim damn near everything else will GIVE you cancer.  Your TV, your cell phone, your computer, the wood stain used to color your kitchen table, the foam in your car seats, the clothing you wear.  OK, I am exaggerating a bit, but come on, who else has not heard these reports and thought “For fuck’s sake can I even go outside anymore???”  Nope, skin cancer from the sun!!!!  SPF 3000 won’t even stop it!

Oh but wait!!!  Being a shut-in is no longer acceptable either.  Your air conditioner somehow mysteriously throws cancer makers into the very air you breathe.  Allergens will kill you, your water is full of chemicals that will kill you, your mattresses not only don’t support you worth a crap, but they are dangerous too.  Let’s not even talk about how dangerous a bathtub or shower is, or carpet cleaner etc etc etc.

You can’t date.  Meeting people in a club is dangerous, and meeting people online is even worse.  Women have to carry pepper spray in order to keep from being robbed in broad daylight, and we must all have a basic fundamental grasp of self-defense, or surely we will be killed before we are 30.

People, this is getting stupid.  I personally, am so sick of seeing or hearing these kinds of comments that I can’t see straight.  It’s called LIFE for a reason.  It is meant to be lived without having some stupid political agenda thrown into our faces on a daily basis about what IS or IS NOT good for us.  Yes, we should eat healthy, yes, we all know smoking is bad for us, yes, we know we should be safe when we are alone.

However, none of these things are going to make our break our lives.  Eating a steak is NOT going to kill you.  Having full fat mayo is not going to kill you.  Drinking tap water is not going to kill you.  What will kill you is looking back on your life later and thinking to yourself “CRAP I should have had more fun and less worries!!!”

  1. Amen!  I am in totally agreeance.  I don’t think agreeance is a word, but hey, such is life.I learned in Physics class last semester that the magnetic field given off by a cell phone is so minuscule that it’s surprising anyone ever even chose them as possible cancer sources.  The magnetic field of the EARTH is much larger than the field from a cell phone!  Oops, I shouldn’t have said that.  Now the danger freaks will all commit mass suicide since living on Planet Earth will give them cancer.

  2. Agreed! It seems like there are SO many “don’t’s” in life and a lack of “do’s”.

  3. que sera sera! something like that.

  4. Love it…. although I must say as a result of my research, my son doesn’t want a laptop on his lap, and my husband seems to have his there permanently now!Xoxoxo!

  5. hmm then you grow up and get more paranoid when you get sick….

  6. Love this post   If you listen to all the don’t do, or eat you might as well hang it up now.  OH for when life was simpler!!!!!

  7. worrying about ones health actually puts stress on you, which in turn makes you unhealthy. kind of funny how that works isnt it?

  8. hahahaha AMEN. this is sooo true! i don’t watch/read the news for a reason. hahai mean seriously, how many people have died from eating too much red meat and shit like that? the freaking native americans basically lived off raw meat.oh but wait. you can probably get cancer from that.loveee this post =]

  9. Amen. I hate that too. I don’t eat healthy, and I’m proud of it! Whoo-hoo! Fat freedom! 😛

  10. SO weird – I have had something I wanted to blog for the last few days but haven’t gotten around to it (maybe tomorrow) and it is so on the same wavelength, except that my take is that we have created a culture in which we FEAR everything.  In order to keep people safe we evoke fear – not that wearing seatbelts is bad, but the fear reaction leads to a lack of courage that allows us to be manipulated by politicians and terrorists (who have more in common than one might think, perhaps) playing on our fears.  Roosevelt may have been right.

  11. *warning*  non and low fat food gives you cancer

  12. You go girl. I totally agree with you 100%. Have you ever thought about being a journalist. You would be really good at it. This was a great blog! Have a great day! Peace and Love!

  13. And yet another Amen!!!  I will be smart about what I do , but I intend to enjoy my life till it is over.

  14. Drinking tap water won’t give you cancer, it will just give you leftover medicines that people in your community have flushed down the toilet. lol In trace amounts, of course. and I’m all for letting the kids enjoy life, when they’re 18 and not around to give me a heart attack while they do it. Because there is no fear in the world that remotely resembles the instant fear you get when you see your child about to get hurt. lol

  15. i agree…we wait way too long to live life.  a motto i have used for a long time…i work so that i can live.  i dont live so that i can work.if we live in fear of our lives each and every day, how can we be living.hows the roomate working?

  16. Damn straight! Although drinking tap water from Mexico is questionable.

  17. @sigma_C_eq – OK that cracked me up!@sortingandforting – Exactly!@RogueAtHeart – Agreed!@sarahsD – Which I guess could be a good thing depending on how many more little ones you want!@Ikwa – NO kidding!@omshanthi – Exactly!  Just enjoy life.  It’s going to end up the same for everyone anyway, so why worry about it?@lyricsninja – What is this stress word you speak of?  @laurenmaureen – Granted, we tend to live longer than the people who had horrible diets in the past, but I don’t think anything is bad for you in moderation!@VaultESL – Pft, you’re not fat 😛@TheRisingWriter – But you forget that we should be afraid to wear a seatbelt in case it traps us and we die from that!@storyslut – Then I am totally screwed!@xxcjs_babyxx – I have thought about Journalism as a career path however, right now I need to eat and keep a roof over my head, which I cannot do and go back to school full time. 😦@tvtfln – I am so glad to hear it!@bethro78 – I wonder if there has recently been any medicinal marijuana flushed into my water system….hmmmm.  I understand the panic over the kids!  Saying no is a good thing…til they are 18!@buddy71 – I say that same motto quite frequently.  Roomie is fine!@tinahawt – Why do I have the image from Tarzan in my head where the baby elephant is saying “MOM, as you SURE this water is sanitary?  It looks questionable to me!”

  18. @Southernlass – I see what you mean and I think it is a good choice, but you are still a great writer. Keep up the good work!

  19. @xxcjs_babyxx – Thank you, that is a really nice thing for you to say!

  20. Your welcome! I want to also be a journalist I just need to get my life settled first and then I will work on that later. Until then I am going to keep writing on here and finish working on my story. Have a great day! Peace and Love!

  21. @xxcjs_babyxx – I thought about it really hard, and I even started to go back to school for it last year, but I was only able to take one class.  I would have to quit my day job to go back to school for it full time, and I just can’t.  Take my advice, if you want to do it, get it done now, it gets harder when you have other obligations as you get older!

  22. @Southernlass – thanks for the advice! I will try as hard as I can to get it done.  I also hope you accomplish your goal as well.Have a great day! Peace and Love!

  23. @Southernlass – yeah good thing, I don’t know how many more my body could takex

  24. I like to remind people the number one symptom of death is life. We can’t have one without the other. Might has well enjoy it while you can.

  25. Don’t get cancer, it’ll give you cancer!!!  Breathing can give you lung cancer!!! Eating will give you…stomach cancer?!!?!?!!  Thinking will give you brain cancer!!!!!I know all that stuff, and so I can proudly say that if I stop doing those things I’ll never get cancer and I will PWN you bitches, and you’ll get everything cancer!!*dies from lack of everything, excluding stupidity*

  26. I swore that I would never do that to my kids and I do.  shame on me.  Sometimes it is warranted, but other times parents are just being paranoid.
