We are a 1 car family. My husband is an immigrant from Scotland and at the ripe age of 43 has never had a driver’s license. This means I regularly find myself sitting in the car waiting on him to get off of work. It’s not very often I find myself waiting for extended periods of time, but sometimes he gets off work late or something holds him up and I find myself in the car twiddling my thumbs. The other day I thought it might be interesting to share ways I find to amuse myself or be productive when I am sitting in the car.
1. Read an E-Book, listen to a podcast or watch Netflix if you can find a WiFi signal with your smart phone!
I am currently reading Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud. I can usually whip out a chapter or two of any book while waiting for 10 minutes or so. I also love the Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep. I could go on and on with books all day, suffice it to say I usually read 2-3 books a week. I also love watching TV Series on Netflix. Some of my favorites are Bones, How I Met Your Mother, Glee, The Vampire Diaries (I swear I am out of high school), Sherlock, New Girl and Sons of Anarchy. I usually listen to Dave Ramsey’s podcast while in the car as well as some other NOT family friendly podcasts.
2. Go through sale papers and check Ibotta and Checkout 51 for weekly deals. Make your grocery list.
I love taking a few moments to check my phone apps for new information including sales to help the good ole’ grocery budget. It takes 5-10 minutes to check my apps and if I have scratch paper, start a grocery list. It also gives me a chance as soon as my hubby hops in the car to ask him to look it over and see if we need to add anything.
3. Write out a few checks to mail or start balancing your checkbook
I have written out checks while my husband pumps gas or runs a quickie errand into the store. I also keep envelopes and stamps in a small organizer in my purse so if we’re out and about I can mail something on the way home. I’m weird about sending mail out from my house. I think it started when I was afraid people would lift Netflix discs from my mailbox. I can also use the smart phone to verify checks or receipts have cleared the bank.
4. Set a timer and take power nap
I am a notorious napper. I love naps. I love 4 hour naps, I love 10 minute naps. I have napped on my lunch break in the car. I set a timer on my phone and if I am particularly exhausted I will nap for 10-15 minutes. If I’m lucky, I’ll even hear the alarm when it goes off. 😀 NAPS!
5. Brainstorm future blog topics
You know that A-HA moment that happens from time to time when you find the perfect blog topic and forget to write it down? Well, in the car you can A-HA away in PEACE and QUIET and brainstorm the whole time. Many of my blog ideas have come from times when I just had a few minutes completely alone to come up with something new, or something I have observed while waiting. Distraction free zones are great for these sessions!
So, the next time you’re in the car pool line to pick up the kiddos, in a long line at the bank, or waiting to pick up your husband, give yourself a few minutes of YOU time! It’s worth it!
